Artist Statement
Sarah E Shaw is a self-taught artist based in South East London. Her work spans a variety of media, including painting, photography, and printing, to communicate a range of ideas. She draws on her previous experience as a makeup artist to investigate societal beauty standards and the anxiety that can arise from imperfections and mistakes.
Central to her exploration is the concept of ‘mindscapes’, abstract compositions that emerged as a form of artistic escape and introspection. These mindscapes reflect her ongoing fascination with the natural world and the inner landscapes of the mind.
Since 2022, she has been engaged with the study of the planet Venus, drawn to its inherent associations with feminine deities and its harsh climate. Sarah finds symbolic links with the planet’s natural environment that resonate with the relentless pursuit of beauty and perfection for many here on Earth. She expresses this through paintings, prints, and written stories, seeking a new mythology for Venus.
